On September 4, 2026, the Son La Provincial People's Committee, in coordination with the Association of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development Sciences, organized a meeting to Review the development of a pilot model for sustainable coffee production complying with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in Nậm Lầu and Mường Chanh communes.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Nguyễn Thành Công, Vice Chairman of the Son La Provincial People's Committee, with the participation of representatives from the Association of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development Sciences, Forest Trends Organization, departments, agencies, local authorities, as well as businesses and cooperatives in the province.
The objective of the meeting was to assess the results of implementing the pilot model in Nậm Lầu and Mường Chanh, and to discuss solutions for maintaining, improving, and gradually scaling up the sustainable coffee production model, meeting EUDR requirements in Son La province.
At the meeting, the Son La Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment reported on the coffee production situation and preparations for EUDR compliance in the province. The Association of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development Sciences and Forest Trends presented the results of the pilot model development, and proposed solutions for maintaining, improving, and scaling up the model across the entire province. The Son La Provincial People's Committee acknowledged and highly appreciated the coordination and support from the Association of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development Sciences and Forest Trends in the process of building and implementing the model.
After discussions and exchanges, the delegates agreed on seveal important directions to continue improving the Production area data system and enhancing the EUDR compliance capacity of Son La's coffee sector.
Combining two data mapping methods
Scaling up the model requires a flexible combination of satellite imagery interpretation and direct data collection at each land plot. This approach aims to ensure that data is updated promptly, comprehensively, and accurately, thereby quickly providing solutions for high-risk areas (“red zones”).
Accelerating data review in the “120-day-and-night” campaign
The Provincial People's Committee launched a campaign to review and collect Production area data across the entire province; it is expected to publicly announce "green zones" (safe production areas, compliant with EUDR) before November 31, 2026. After December 31, 2026, products from "red zones" will absolutely not be used for export.
Enhancing capacity and data sharing
One of the key tasks is to mobilize resources to organize "Train-the-Trainer" and "Train-the-Farmer" (TOT/TOF) programs, thereby enhancing the capacity of local officials and producers in collecting, updating, and managing Production area data.
Son La also aims to build a shared provincial database, and encourage businesses and cooperatives to contribute and share raw material Production area data to gradually establish a comprehensive, synchronized, and regularly updatable information system.
Strengthening the participation of authorities and local forces
To ensure that the review process is implemented synchronously, communes are guided to establish task forces led by the Commune Secretary or Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, with the participation of mass organizations, militia forces, agricultural extension officers, and other relevant forces.
The results from the pilot model in Nậm Lầu and Mường Chanh are considered an important practical basis for Son La to continue improving its Production area data collection and management methods, enhancing traceability, and preparing to meet EUDR requirements for coffee supply chains in the coming period.
