The rice industry plays a particularly important role in food security, the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, and agricultural exports in Vietnam. Currently, Vietnam has approximately 7 million hectares of rice cultivation land each year, with millions of farmers directly involved in rice production, especially concentrated in the Mekong Delta, a key rice production area nationwide. However, rice production is also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through methane emissions from paddy cultivation. Amidst increasingly strong global commitments to emissions reduction, the rice industry is facing an opportunity to transition to a more sustainable production model while accessing new financial resources from the carbon market.
In recent years, many low-emission rice farming models have shown clear potential in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through measures such as irrigation water management, reduced input usage, optimized cultivation processes, and improved resource efficiency. Notably, the Project for Sustainable Development of 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice in the Mekong Delta is being implemented as an important step towards green growth for Vietnam's rice sector. These models not only contribute to climate change adaptation but also open up opportunities to create added value for agricultural products and increase income for smallholder farmers through carbon credits.
To share practical insights into the potential of the carbon market in agriculture, the webinar “Opportunities from the Carbon Market for Smallholder Farmers and Sustainable Agriculture – From the Perspective of Low-Emission Rice Production Projects” will feature discussions on the experience of implementing low-emission rice projects, benefit-sharing mechanisms, as well as opportunities and challenges for smallholder farmers and businesses participating in this market.
At the webinar, speakers will share:
- How to develop and operate carbon credit projects in the rice sector, including smallholder farmer participation and applicable standards;
- The roles of stakeholders such as businesses, cooperatives, local authorities, and supporting organizations in the implementation process;
- Benefit-sharing mechanisms among participating parties, especially with smallholder farmers directly involved in production;
- Advantages, difficulties, and lessons learned during the model's development process;
- Implications and recommendations for other agricultural sectors interested in the carbon market and low-emission production.

- Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh – Rice Project Manager, Rikolto, with over 7 years of experience in the rice and sustainable agriculture sector, focusing on low-emission rice cultivation, SRP standards, and sustainable rice value chain development in the Mekong Delta.
- Mr. Tran Hong Thanh – Carbon Officer, Rice Program, with over 10 years of experience in sustainable agriculture projects and 6 years in developing carbon credit projects, climate change adaptation and mitigation in rice cultivation.
