As the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is gradually coming into force, the requirement for traceability down to the farm plot level has become one of the biggest challenges for Vietnam's agricultural and forest product sectors. Farm plot data – including geographical location information, plot boundaries, land use history, and related factors – is no longer a “supporting element” but has become a core foundation for demonstrating compliance with the Regulation. However, in practice, building and managing farm plot databases (CSDL) faces many limitations: thin financial and human resources, fragmented data systems, and uneven implementation capacity across localities and commodity sectors. In this context, the question is not just “what needs to be done,” but more importantly, how to do it effectively and feasibly?
To clarify the above issues, the EUDR Forestry Network and the Agro-forestry Policy Research Network are coordinating to organize a webinar “Collecting and managing crop production data to comply with EUDR: Choosing solutions in a limited resource context”. The content of the webinar will cover everything from foundational principles to implementation tools, including:
- Clarifying the necessity of building and managing farm plot data in the context of EUDR and increasingly stringent market requirements.
- Updating basic information on the 2020 forest map, a crucial baseline data for identifying deforestation risks and adapting to EUDR.
- Analyzing specific requirements for farm plot databases by commodity, thereby highlighting key points to consider during the process of building and operating the data system.
- Introducing current popular tools for collecting farm plot data, along with an assessment of their strengths and points to consider when applying them in practice.
Speakers and Guests
The webinar will feature experts and representatives from agencies and organizations with direct experience in geo-data and forestry policy:
- Dr. Truong Tat Do, Department of Forestry and Forest Protection
- M.Sc. Pham Ngoc Hai, Forest Inventory and Planning Institute
- Dr. To Xuan Phuc, Forest Trends Organization
- Along with the participation and discussion of business representatives from the coffee and rubber sectors.
