For many years, coffee has always played a role as one of Vietnam's key export industries, as well as an important link in agricultural trade with the EU. However, behind the impressive growth figures are increasingly clear challenges: expanding agricultural production has been contributing to resource degradation, increasing pressure on forests and reducing the ability to adapt to climate change.
In that context, new requirements from the international market, especially frameworks such as the European Green Deal, EUDR, or regulations on appraisal and sustainability reporting – are gradually reshaping the way coffee is produced and traded. Not just stopping at quality or productivity, Vietnam's coffee industry increasingly must meet higher environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards if it wants to maintain and expand export markets.
In that context, the project “Enhancing value and sustainable development of Vietnam's coffee industry (2025–2028)” is prepared to be implemented as an initiative to promote this transformation process in a more substantive and inclusive direction. The project is implemented by SNV and the Institute for Management and Sustainable Development (MSD), with support from the European Union, focusing on two key coffee regions, Lam Dong and Son La. Instead of approaching individual actors, the project builds a systemic approach, targeting the entire ecosystem of the coffee industry. The focus is on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), cooperatives and related organizations to gradually integrate ESG practices into their business models, through training, technical consulting and connecting with appropriate financial sources. A notable point in the project's approach is the combination of capacity building, building practical tools (such as a set of ESG criteria, an online resource platform) and creating market momentum, through investment connection activities and recognition of pioneering models.
To share approaches, activities and opportunities for cooperation between parties involved in the Project, the Policy Research Network in collaboration with the Sustainable Coffee Network organized a webinar: Webinar: Enhancing value and sustainable development of Vietnam's coffee industry.
