Amidst increasingly stringent international regulations on sustainable development and traceability, especially the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), Vietnam's key agricultural commodities such as coffee and cacao are facing a profound transformation in production organization and supply chains. Vietnam is currently one of the world's leading coffee exporters, playing a crucial role in the global supply chain. Meanwhile, the cacao sector, though smaller in scale, is gradually asserting its position in the high-quality segment, especially through models of smallholder farmer linkages and deep processing. However, a commonality for both commodities is a significant reliance on small-scale farmers — a group facing numerous challenges in meeting new market requirements, from traceability and geographical data to ensuring no deforestation after the cut-off date of December 31, 2020.
In this context, startup models involving smallholder farmer linkages, quality control from input to output, and building transparent value chains are becoming a promising direction. This is not just about enhancing product value, but also a practical approach to adapt to EUDR and increasingly prevalent sustainability standards in the international market. To share practical experiences from a business model directly implementing this approach, the Network for Agroforestry Policy Research, in collaboration with the Sustainable Coffee Network, is organizing the webinar “The Entrepreneurial Journey of High-Quality Coffee and Cacao: Linking Smallholder Farmers for Sustainable Development”.
