Hanoi, March 27, 2026 – The program Forest Talk & Link #2 with the theme “Material Transition – From Policy to Architecture” took place in both online (via Zoom) and in-person formats at ConsHub – National Convention Center, Hanoi. The program was organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Timber and Forestry Association (SAWA), with technical support from Forest Trends, and sponsorship and companionship from UKAID, NICFI, and Consmedia.
The architecture and interior design sectors are currently facing increasing pressure to reduce emissions, use resources efficiently, and meet sustainable development criteria. In this context, material selection has become a crucial factor, especially as trends in green buildings, circular economy, and carbon emission reduction become more prominent. For wood materials, this requirement extends beyond technical or aesthetic considerations to encompass the origin of raw materials, legality, traceability, and environmental friendliness. Promoting the use of plantation wood, certified sustainable wood (such as FSC, PEFC), and alternatives to natural wood is considered an important direction to contribute to the promotion of legal, traceable, and sustainable raw material use in the architecture and interior design industries.
Material transition is no longer solely a matter of design or production, but is becoming a pervasive issue throughout the entire value chain of the architecture and interior design industry – from policy formulation, material selection to application in construction. At the policy level, regulations related to environmental protection and emission reduction are gradually shaping material criteria. At the enterprise level, the transition requires adjustments in raw material sourcing, production technology, and the capacity to supply materials that meet sustainability standards. Meanwhile, in the design and construction phases, architects, engineers, and investors play a decisive role in selecting and incorporating materials into projects, including prioritizing environmentally friendly and traceable materials. This simultaneous change across these stages indicates that material transition cannot occur in isolation but requires collaboration among stakeholders in the value chain, particularly in bridging policy with implementation practices and market demands.
The Forest Talk & Link #2 program was organized to create a space for dialogue among stakeholders in the industry, including state management agencies, businesses, associations, experts, and the architecture and construction community. The program was attended by representatives from management agencies, research institutes, universities, material manufacturing and supply businesses, as well as architects, media agencies, and experts in the construction field. The discussion topics are expected to contribute to clarifying barriers, sharing practical experiences, and promoting collaboration among parties in transitioning materials towards sustainability.
The program focuses on the following key areas:
- Analysis of pioneering models in the use of sustainable materials and alternatives to natural wood.
- Sharing perspectives from policy, business, and architectural viewpoints.
- Discussing the roles of stakeholders in promoting material transition.
- Proposing policy directions and solutions for sustainable material development.
