When it comes to Vietnam’s coffee sector, the Central Highlands are often considered the traditional “capital.” However, over the past decade, Son La has emerged as a key Arabica coffee-producing region in the country, currently contributing around 50% of Vietnam’s total Arabica coffee output, equivalent to 40,000 tons per year. Most of the province’s coffee production is destined for export, with 30–40% entering the EU market – a market that is increasingly enforcing strict requirements on legality, traceability, and deforestation-free sourcing under the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
In this context, Vietnam’s coffee sector’s preparation for EUDR is not only a matter for the Central Highlands provinces but is also closely linked to Son La – the opportunities and challenges that Son La faces in complying with EUDR reflect the broader picture of Vietnam’s coffee sector as it engages with the EU market. The webinar “Son La coffee sector preparing for EUDR compliance”, organised by the Agricultural and Forestry Policy Research Network, will discuss the history of Son La’s coffee region, the current state of the supply chain, as well as orientations and solutions in the context of EUDR implementation.
