On the afternoon of October 4, 2024, the EUDR - Forestry Network organized an online discussion with the topic Voluntary certification systems and compatibility with EUDR requirements to discuss the level of responsiveness of voluntary certification systems in the wood and coffee industry to EUDR requirements.
The four main speakers of the discussion are: Mr. Vu Tan Phuong, Director of the National Forest Certification Office (VFCS/PEFC); Ms. Vu Que Anh, Representative of FSC Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Thiet, Country Director, Rainforest Alliance; Ms. Nguyen Viet Ha, Senior Manager, 4C Organization. Under the coordination of Dr. To Xuan Phuc, CEO, Forest Trends Organization, the discussion was successfully organized with the participation of more than 200 delegates from businesses and associations across the country.
During the discussion, the speakers gave an overview of the requirements of the FSC, PEFC, Rainforest Alliance, and 4C certification sets; the level of response of these certification systems to the EUDR and the adaptation actions of these certification sets in the context of the EUDR about to take effect.
The common point of the above certification systems is that they all allow businesses to export DDS appraisal reports to present to EU authorities when exporting to Europe. In addition, the systems are highly secure, protecting information of businesses and parties involved in the supply chain. In addition, certification systems also calibrate and integrate EUDR requirements into chain of custody tracing. The application of EUDR compliance indicators is a voluntary choice for businesses, and is reference information for competent authorities in the EU.
The topic of the discussion received the attention of many participants. The discussion questions of the discussion revolved around the issues of creating explanatory reports for companies without voluntary sustainability certificates, the level of responsiveness of certification systems to EUDR, digital technology platforms for applying certificates and EUDR, map systems and data used by certification systems. In addition, many delegates are interested in basic issues related to EUDR regulations such as products that must comply with EUDR, or whether product industries affected by EUDR are within the scope of certification or not.
