On the afternoon of September 27, 2024, the EUDR-Forestry Network hosted an online seminar "Applying digital technology in supply chain traceability across sectors to comply with EUDR." The keynote speaker was Dr. Hoàng Liên Sơn from the Center for Forestry Economic Research, under the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences. Facilitated by Dr. Tô Xuân Phúc, Executive Director of Forest Trends in Vietnam, the seminar successfully gathered nearly 170 participants representing businesses and associations nationwide.
At the seminar, Dr. Hoàng Liên Sơn presented insights on the Plantation Code Initiative, highlighting its key features, its role in supply chain traceability, its alignment with EUDR requirements, and its potential for scaling up within the wood industry and other sectors in the future.
During the discussion session, participants expressed interest in the compatibility of the iTWood system with EUDR requirements and the availability of data for the wood, coffee, and rubber sectors in practice. Alongside the need to establish geographic information data for farming households, delegates emphasized that plantation and geographic data should be managed by government agencies. This underscores the need for active involvement from state authorities in developing the system, collecting, and refining the data.
In addition to discussing data and geographic information, participants also highlighted the critical role of intermediary buyers in the supply chain. Therefore, alongside engaging farming households, state agencies, and communication channels, efforts should focus on involving intermediaries in the supply chain to ensure compliance with EUDR requirements.
