The export-oriented wood processing industry (the wood sector) is currently one of the most deeply integrated sectors in global markets. Vietnamese wood products are now present in more than 100 countries and territories, with export turnover reaching USD 16–17 billion per year. The sector’s growth has been driven by multiple factors, including enabling government mechanisms and policies, a strong export-oriented focus, the development of a stable and sustainable domestic plantation timber supply, as well as the flexibility, responsiveness, and continuous efforts of the private sector. However, deeper integration also comes with increasingly stringent requirements on legality, sustainability, and traceability across the entire supply chain. This poses a significant challenge, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, which often lack the necessary resources to comply.
To gain a deeper understanding of these issues, the Agricultural and Forestry Policy Research Network respectfully invites distinguished lecturers and colleagues to participate Webinar: Export-oriented wood processing in a highly volatile market. The webinar focuses on analyzing the current state of production and exports in the sector, as well as key mechanisms and policies that are shaping its development both now and in the future. In the context of highly volatile export markets, how should the wood sector respond—from a policy and regulatory perspective, and from the perspective of business operations? The webinar also offers a number of recommendations for research institutions regarding priority areas for the sector.
The webinar speaker is Trần Lê Huy, a core member of the research group of wood industry associations. Mr. Huy has 20 years of experience working in the wood sector, from the perspective of enterprises and, in particular, through association operations and management. His research focuses on policy advisory aspects related to supply chain legality and sustainability, taxation, and export markets—for association members in particular and for the wood sector as a whole. He is also directly involved in policy advisory activities for regulatory authorities and development organizations supporting the sector, including providing input into the development of guidance for enterprises to comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
